It’s been awhile. A lot has happened over the last few months. To alleviate anxiety due to a statement like “a lot has happened over the last few months” I will first state that nothing that has happened over the last few months has been bad by any means. As humans (and bots if any are around parsing this for Skynet), our thoughts jump immediately to the worst case scenario.
“A lot has happened! Did you get struck by lightning? Forget the tea bag in your tea and ruin it? Escape the clutches of a maniacal theatrical producer bent on making a less than perfect Hamlet with an Alligator in the lead role?”
None of those things happened, except the tea one—too often, actually.
My understanding is that our minds jump to the worst case for survival. Because, worrying about how much you’ll owe on taxes this year helps keep you from being devoured by an alligator playing Hamlet.
I’m moving.
I have moved.
It’s not a normal move, like getting up from a chair while in the middle of typing a sentence because you can’t work out the ending (this sentence, in particular). It’s a move across country—across countries—across the world.
I moved from sunny Florida, where it has been raining all summer despite its moniker, to the Czech Republic. It was a move that was rather rushed.
My wife and I have been discussing moving to Czechia for some time. She is originally from there and all her family is there (or rather, here), so it made sense after having a daughter to live where a big conglomeration of family is. We visit yearly and on our summer visit this year, with a looming end to our expensive apartment lease, we thought, let’s just do it: let’s move.
This isn’t the first time we made this decision. During the pandemic, we moved to New York City. Again from Florida.
There’s a lot of moving from Florida, not much moving to.
That move was also a quick decision.
So, we moved from Florida in about a month—actually exactly a month. This is why this blog has languished over the last few months. First, I was in the Czech Republic on later parental leave, then I was moving from Florida to the Czech Republic. And now here I am.
So what about this blog?
Well, it’s always one of those things that will be on and off unfortunately, mostly because I’m not really ever sure what direction to take this.
For now, I will focus on what I find interesting and what I’m working on as a writer and illustrator. There may be some reviews of books. Some talk about my own writing. And some things I’m currently interested in, whether that’s learning Czech (which I absolutely need to do) or Stoicism, which helps me keep my head screwed on particularly when moving really far away.
So, this will be a less tame blog than intended, which is fine.
This is not a tame blog.
Never has been anyways.
